Graham Niven

Welcome to Niven Photography - I am a freelance photographer from Scotland.

My influences and inspiration as a photographer are diverse and unfettered - I try not to define myself in a specific category or focus which might limit any sense of expression. As such, my photographic style is an organic visual interpretation of my experience of life, not a moulded and perfected format, but a visual storytelling with a hint of the photo-journalistic adventurer.  I am drawn to natural environments and relative wilderness - lines, light, organic forms and patterns of nature; I endeavour to capture a spirit or character in a scene, a human portrait, an animal encounter and the intrigue of random objects and places which have stories to tell.

Through my work in humanitarian/development aid I have been fortunate to visit an array of places, often remote and wild; to meet and connect with some incredible people and their lives, to gaze across some extraordinary landscapes, and to witness some amazing natural wonders. My camera has always been with me; a tool for observation and documenting during fieldwork, but also for capturing a slice of life in such places, one often very different to that which we may know.

Being more consistently based back in Scotland in recent years, my photography has leaned towards reflecting adventures closer to home  -  landscapes and nature inspired.

I have recently moved from the big city (Edinburgh) to the wee forest village (Nethy Bridge) in the Cairngorms National Park. Though I  know the area well, I am looking forward to exploring a little deeper with the camera, and with more intent on pre-visioned shoots as well as candid adventures.

I am enjoying developing and evolving this platform when I can  from which to experiment, learn, share and celebrate my photographic expression; as well as receiving all the feedback and support.
